Q&A |
Unique ManifestationsFebruary 6, 2007 The world in which you were born is just one model of reality. Other cultures are not failed attempts at being you: they are unique manifestations of the human spirit. - Wade Davis, anthropologist and ethnobiologist Wade Davis has spent a lifetime studying cultures around the world. He is involved in efforts to ensure the survival of cultural and biological diversity. After I read this quote, I was struck by the wide range of situations it seemed to apply to. It isn't limited to cultures or countries. There are those who can only see value in one kind of lifestyle, relegating those who do not share the same ambitions to the status of "wannabes". Clubs, neighbourhoods, companies, cultivate cultures that by their very nature exclude those do not conform to the expectations of the conduct of the group. The Golden Rule takes the opposite approach. It calls us to embrace diversity; to accept unique manifestations of the human spirit as natural. To conform through our non-conformity. A Golden Rule approach to Creation ensures not only the survival of diversity, but encourages us to embrace that diversity to explore and experience Creation in new ways.
