Meeting Life

February 8, 2008

All life is meeting - Martin Buber

Unless you happen to be into deep theological and philosophical discourse, you probably don't know Martin Buber. His works are not for the faint of heart. And yet, I found that much of what he had to say was summed up in the four words of this quote.

All life is meeting - connecting - relating. Although we're isolated as human beings, we're still social creatures. We seek out the "other" in order to create meaning in our lives.

And is it any wonder then that in western societies that increasingly isolate individuals from one another that the greatest ill is loneliness? Or that there is a resurgence in the prominence of the greatest relational statement ever formulated? The Golden Rule.

Let's hold Buber's four words in front of us as we go through the day and seek out "meeting", seek out relationship. Because in doing so we seek out life.
