Solidarity

May 13, 2007

The first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings. - Albert Schweitzer

It's been said that no one statement, like the Golden Rule, can define our conduct. We need, the argument goes, to put any such statement into context of time and place and circumstance. After all, what is proper in one place may be the worst form of insult in another.

Ethics, it seems to me, is an attempt to add that definition. After all, isn't "solidarity" a very good to sum up our guiding principle of reciprocal treatment?
