Q&A |
Making SpacesDecember 21, 2007 Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are. - Hafsat Abiola, activist, founder of KIND "Securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are." That, it seems to me, is an important understanding of the Golden Rule. Often, we accept the Golden Rule as a measure of tolerance, of how much we’re willing to accept of others’ opinions or perspectives. But the Golden Rule also compels us to be an active part of the world that we all share. We not only need to acknowledge the space that others make for themselves, we have to make space and say to others “Here, this is yours. Make of it what you will.” That’s a much greater challenge.

I welcome opportunities to speak to groups of all
kinds about the universality of the Golden Rule. |
