Hizkias Assefa Receives Peace Award

It's always a pleasure to be able to help raise awareness of the efforts of individuals and groups around the world who are working to promote peaceful co-existence and mutual respect between peoples of differing traditions. At a time when it seems as though the only way to get in the news is to blow something to pieces, its important to recognize the efforts of those who work to put the pieces back together.

 Professor Hizkias Assefa receives Peace Award of the Year

 INTERFAITH PEACE-BUILDING INITIATIVE (IPI), a peace-building association with the aim of promoting enduring, daily interfaith cooperation, to end religiously motivated violence and to create a culture of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings, upon the approval of its board members presented the first Peace Award of the Year to Professor Hizkias Assefa

 On the occasion of the Award ceremony Hon. Mussie Hailu, Board Chairman of IPI, said  "IPI gave the award to the Professor in appreciation of his outstanding contribution to humanity in the area of peace building, reconciliation, conflict resolution & negotiation, promoting a culture of peace, the golden rule, interfaith harmony and for his exemplary work of living for the sake of others"

 The award is given to the Professor Hizkias on the occasion of the celebration of the international day of peace and commemoration of the 60th anniversy of the United Nations, held at the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Arts and Design on September 21, 2006

 Prof. Hizkias Assefa is a scholar and an active international peace-building practitioner involved in mediation and facilitation of reconciliation process in many parts of the world. He is trained in Law, Economics, Public Management, International Relations and Conflict Resolution. He is Professor of Conflict Studies at the Conflict Transformation Graduate Program at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

 He has served as a resident scholar in a number of universities including Brandies University in Boston, the United States. He is the founder and co-coordinator of the African Peace-building and Reconciliation Network in Nairobi, Kenya, which is the base for his peace making practice.

 Prof. Assefa has been engaged in second-track diplomacy work in Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Uganda and Mozambique.

 He has also been involved as facilitator in grass-root peace building and reconciliation initiatives in the above countries as well as in Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Angola, Kenya, Somalia, South Africa, and Colombia. He has served as consultant to the United Nations, European Union, and many international and national NGOs and conducted conflict resolution and peace-building training seminars and workshops in over 50 countries in the world. He has written many journal articles and book chapters.

 Prior to his career as a mediator, Prof. Assefa worked as an attorney in government and private practice both in Ethiopia and the United States, and has taught Law, Economics, International Relations and Conflict Resolution at the University of Pittsburgh, La Roche College, and Addis Ababa University. He has lectured in peace building, reconciliation, conflict and humanitarian assistance in a number of universities in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America.
